If conditions are not safe for you, they are not safe for your pet. Never Leave your pet behind! Most Shelters will not accept pets. You must make a plan; keeping in mind a companion animal is happiest in a familiar, safe environment.

  • Ask friends, relatives, breed club members, groomers, trainers or others outside the affected area whether they could shelter your animals.
  • Contact hotels and motels outside of your immediate area to check policies on accepting pets. Ask if a no pet policy could be waived in a disaster.
  • Make sure your pet is a more welcome guest by having a crate and carrier for each animal. And be sure each companion animal is wearing a secure identification tag.
  • Assemble a Pet Disaster Kit with your animal’s medical records, medications, collars, leashes, food, water, bowl, a photo of you and your pet, a manual can opener, clean up supplies, paper towel, plastic bags.
  • Bring enough supplies for ten days and take your pets and the supplies with you even if you only think you will be gone a short time.
  • Bring pets inside well in advance of a hurricane, animals sense storms before we do. As hurricane approaches call ahead to confirm emergency shelter arrangements and get directions.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute to evacuate. Make sure your gas tank is full and bring your cell phone and car charger.
